If you have had your melasma treated in the past and the dark pigmentations got worse, you were likely treated with the older lasers.

While those older lasers can treat pigmented skin lesions like moles or freckles, they heat up the skin too much and in doing so would make your melasma lesions worse.

 

What Is Melasma?

 

Melasma is a condition of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) that can happen in both men and women.  Women sometimes get it after hormonal changes such as pregnancy, or later on in life with menopause.

 

 

Men can get it too in sun exposed areas such as the left side of the face, which is exposed to the sun more due to driving.

 

Melasma causes brown or gray-brown patches to appear on the cheeks, chin, forehead or nose.

 

In the past, treatments have been tried:

• topical bleaching creams such as hydroxychloroquin,
• facials or chemical peels
• lasers targeting dark lesions

 

The problem has been that the creams only lighten the pigments temporarily.  Also treatment with the older laser technology heats up the skin too much, and heat induces more melasma to form, so your melasma may look better immediately after treatment, but it will come back even darker afterwards.

 

The New PicoLaser is a Much Better Treatment for Melasma

Most lasers used to treat dark skin lesions deliver treatment in pulses of energy lasting nanoseconds.  This would disperse the pigments, lightening the skin, but it also heats up the skin.

The new PicoLaser is different because it delivers the energy more quickly in picoseconds (which is 1,000x shorter than nanoseconds). 

As a result the energy is still delivered to disperse the dark melasma pigments but it does it before the skin heats up so it does not induce more melasma to form.

Individual results will vary.  Usual treatment is 1-3 times, 4 weeks apart, although there are no guarantees that is all you will need to resolve your melasma.
